Biobanking is primarily for blood, plasma, leukocyte or fibroblast cells or DNA; samples are de-identified (to allow longitudinal clinical data to be gathered) or anonymized. Samples are put into a database, processed/aliquoted on receipt into 2D-barcodes tubes.
DNA extraction is generally performed for 40 samples/run using an Autogen Flexstar system for ~$8 per sample. DNA concentration and molecular weight are assessed using spectrophotometry (nanodrop 260/280 absorption), fluorescence (pico green intercalation) and by electrophoresis (40ng in 0.8% agarose) ensuring sufficient quality and quality for any subsequent genetic application. 1ml blood typically yields 15ug of high molecular weight DNA sufficient for most genetic studies (6ug DNA is typically required for whole human genome sequencing, 1ug for exome capture and sequencing). DNA, of lesser concentration and purity may be obtained from mouthwash samples.

We use the Autogen Flex Star as a safe and reliable way to extract large quantities DNA from blood and cell lines. This is our main method of obtaining DNA for our genetic research.
