The Ion Proton™Sequencer is a next generation sequencer based on semiconductor sequencing technology. New high-throughput chips will enable a human genome to be sequenced in a single-day workflow. Data analysis, which has long been a bottleneck for whole-genome sequencing, can also be completed in the same day on a single stand-alone server. In the time it takes for other systems to batch sequence 6 genomes, the Ion Proton™Sequencer can sequence and analyze 20 genomes for a small fraction of the cost. The system offers simple, end-to-end workflows for rapid, high-quality sequencing results and makes exome, transcriptome, and human-scale genome sequencing more accessible and affordable than ever. It is currently the first instrument system to provide a human-scale genome in a single day, including data processing, base calling, and variant calling for a fraction of the cost of other systems.
Powered by the newest and most advanced computing hardware (graphics processing unit (GPU) and field-programmable gate array (FPGA) technology), the Ion Proton™ Sequencer performs the compute-intensive data processing within the sequencer itself. The less compute-intensive base calling and variant calling is then performed on the Proton™ Torrent Server.
